non-executive director
Mxogyny is a feminist creative arts organisation established by a collective of University of Edinburgh students in May 2018. We are a volunteer-led digital and print magazine supporting artists to take their first steps in the industry. Mxogyny aspires to be the go-to accessible platform for creative opportunities by providing artists with experience from production to publication. We are a Community-Interest Company (company no. 12297121) and operate on a not-for-profit basis, investing any earnings from magazine sales back into our own programmes that support artists.
After a strategic refresh in 2022, we are looking to grow our income to move Mxogyny from a voluntary organisation to one with paid part-time staff. To help us achieve this, we would like to appoint a new non-executive board member to our board who has experience in arts funding, bid-writing and financial strategy for creative organisations. Beyond this, our current projects include:
Producing an annual magazine
Delivering a mentorship programme
Establishing a self-managing editorial team
Building internal resilience and sustainable infrastructure
Ensuring our content is accessible to all readers
Our board currently comprises six members, two of whom will be standing down later this year. Non-executive directors are responsible for the governance of our organisation. They play an influential role in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction and supporting and challenging organisational performance. In particular, we would welcome applications from individuals who can make a contribution in one or more of the following areas:
Developing the company's financial strategy (inc. grant-writing, fundraising, donor knowledge)
Harnessing strategic partnerships in the arts
A broad knowledge of the voluntary and community sector, with an arts focus
Editorial and magazine publishing experience
Organisational development and change management
The board meets 4-6 times a year, primarily online but with the occasional meet up in-person in our main volunteer bases London or Glasgow. Between meetings, non-executive directors may be asked to provide advice and support to the Mxogyny’s volunteers, especially on matters relating to their areas of expertise.
We are committed to recruiting excellent and diverse board members. We welcome applications from individuals without prior board and governance experience and look for a 2-year commitment from those who apply. It is important to us that our board reflects and represents the communities that we serve. We, therefore, specifically encourage applications from:
Under 30s, disabled, GRT (Gypsy, Romany or Traveller), LGBTQ+, non-binary, refugee or Asylum Seeker, BIPOC, South, South East or East Asian, visually impaired and working class backgrounds.
Whatever your background, we will make it easy to join, participate and share your expertise in your role as a board member. In return for your commitment, you will become part of a vibrant creative community and support some of the leading grassroots artists of our generation. The role is voluntary but out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Further information about Mxogyny can be found on our website.
To discuss the role before applying, our Board Member (Governance & Strategy), Maisie Palmer, would be happy to talk to you. Please email her at mxogyny@gmail.com with ‘Board Member Position’ in the subject bar.
To apply, please send us a CV and cover letter outlining what contribution you could make as a board member at Mxogyny. Email your application to: mxogyny@gmail.com.
