our story
when Mxogyny began as an online feminist publication in May 2018, our intention was to amplify the voices of the under-represented, side-lined and silenced by providing a platform for safe and meaningful creative expression. shortly after our website went live, a group of contributors began to form in Edinburgh where our founders and co-directors, Maisie Palmer and Leonie Hodgkin, were studying at the time. as more individuals joined the project, the content Mxogyny published expanded in both variety and subject matter. today, we receive think pieces, artwork, poetry and prose addressing issues that range from social justice to the joy of sex toys.
we have had over a hundred contributors publish work on our website and we have engaged online with people from over thirty different countries. since our beginning we have published over 250 pieces and, while we still have a strong base in the UK, we are seeing involvement and engagement from all over the world. the importance of this broadening reach is only encouraging us to grow and continue our work on a wider scale.
exactly a year after its establishment, Mxogyny became the co-winner of the inaugural Ellie Maxwell Award in 2019, selected by Firefly International to support our potential as a developing organisation promoting social change. we were awarded £500 to invest in our project, and since then, Mxogyny has transformed into a community-interest company that hosts spoken word nights, produces its own merchandise and more recently, has the capacity to go into print. Mxogyny has existed primarily as an online publication, but we are currently in the process of publishing our first ever zine! stay tuned for updates on our facebook, twitter or instagram.
our ambition
Mxogyny hopes to use its platforms to empower a generation of creatives who face significant disadvantage by equipping them with tools that will allow them to build a career in their selected industry. as a not-for-profit company, Mxogyny is committed to using any funding it receives or profit that it makes to cover the company’s running costs or to make charitable donations. most recently, we donated $124 of the proceeds from our tote bag sales towards community bail funds to support Black Lives Matter protestors across the US. be it political commentators, artists, writers or poets, Mxogyny hopes to play a supportive role to those who face significant barriers due to their gender, sexuality, race, religion, class or disability.
our volunteers
our company is run on an entirely voluntary basis. our team comprises of 16 individuals who cover managerial, editorial, developmental and communicative roles to ensure the work of our contributors gets the recognition it deserves. as a publication that exclusively nurtures the creativity of individuals who are marginalised in one way or another, we apply the same commitment internally when on-boarding volunteers. as such, we hope to strengthen and encourage the alternative skills of individuals who become part of Mxogyny in this way. our incubator models allows us to nurture the talent of creatives but also develop the skills of our team from the inside.
